Esther Schipper currently operates from a large former industrial and warehouse space—once home to a celebrated Berlin newspaper—at Berlin’s gallery-rich Potsdamer Strasse.
Established in 1989 by its namesake in Cologne, the gallery has worked with some of its biggest artists since its early years, including well-known artist Thomas Demand, Cologne-based American artist Julia Scher, and French multi-media artist Philippe Parreno. In 1995, under the name Schipper & Krome the gallery established a project space in Berlin, before moving the entire gallery to the German capital in 1997.
From its Berlin home on Auguststrasse Schipper & Krome began working with international and familiar artists such as Ugo Rondinone and Pierre Huyghe early in their careers, as well as Berlin locals like Matti Braun and Christoph Keller. In 2001 the gallery relocated to a nearby space and returned in 2005 to the name Esther Schipper.
Esther Schipper’s programme grew to include an increasing number of international artists—including Nathan Carter and Gabriel Kuri—and the gallery in 2011 moved again. Following a merger with Johnen Galerie in 2015, in 2017 the gallery moved to its current and larger again premises on Potsdamer Strasse.
Albanian artist Anri Sala’s Take Over (2017) inaugurated the Potsdamer Strasse space. Demonstrating the diversity of thought fostered by the gallery and its holistic approach to exhibitions as conceptual projects, the exhibition comprised a new sound and video installation coupled with a large-scale drawing installation, both exploring national anthems and the politics of the individual and the nation.

Known for its longstanding continuous relationship with its artists, many of Esther Schipper’s prominent artists have been with the gallery since the 1990s. These artists include Angela Bulloch, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Pierre Huyghe, and Liam Gillick. Together they represent a diverse spectrum of conceptually driven, mixed-media exhibition practices.
Alongside these longstanding collaborative relationships, Esther Schipper has come to work with other noteable artists on the Berlin and international art scene such as David Claerbout, Prabhavathi Meppayil, Christopher Roth, Simon Fujiwara, Francesco Gennari, Tao Hui, and Ari Benjamin Meyers. The gallery also represents the estates of influential Romanian artists Stefan Bertalan and Florin Mitroi, and members of the Canadian former trio General Idea.

Esther Schipper gives its artists significant exposure on the Berlin and international art scene, participating in major art fairs such as abc art berlin contemporary; ART COLOGNE; FIAC, Paris; ARCOmadrid; West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai; Frieze London, Los Angeles, and New York; and Art Basel in Miami Beach, Basel, and Hong Kong.
Esther Schipper also participates in Berlin’s popular Gallery Weekend. Including a bookshop in the gallery space since 2018, the gallery also contributes to the literature and discourse on its artists by publishing and selling books, artists’ books, and editions.
